The Delhi High Court dubbed MCI as a “den of corruption” while removing then MCI president, Dr. Ketan Desai, from the medical council in a historic judgment in 2001. More than 15 years later, corruption still writ large as the all important hearings by the Ethics Committee that are supposed to investigate and take disciplinary action against negligent and unethical doctors are missing from the MCI website (www.mciindia.org) (see screen shot from MCI website below taken on Jan 23, 2017). If one log in to the MCI website to find out exactly what has happened during investigation of complaints against doctors, the last minutes of Ethics Sub-committee hearings shown is more than 3 years old. In fact, not a single Ethics Committee minutes has been posted by the MCI for the pubic view since the present MCI members were chosen in December, 2013 under the leadership of Dr. Jayshree Mehta, a well-known longtime Ketan Desai ally from Gujrat.
PBT has lodged a formal complaint (second appeal) with the Central Information Commission (CIC) against this brazen act of non-transparency by the MCI. The CIC has concluded a hearing on this appeal against MCI on 9th January, 2017 when PBT president, Dr. Kunal Saha, personally appeared to argue this matter while MCI attorney, Mr. Shikhar Ranjan, appeared to defend MCI. A judgment in this extremely important case is expected from the CIC soon.
