Stealing Ballots in West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) Election: Call for All Bengal Doctors to Come Forward Against Voting Fraud

Serious allegations have been raised by several medical groups that doctors belonging to the ruling party (Trinamool-Congress) are trying to manipulate the upcoming election in the West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC).  Complaints have surfaced that ballots marked for the professors at various medical colleges (for election under the “teachers” quota) were snatched by Trinamool-backed doctors (see news below).  Other allegations that names of many doctors have been deliberately removed from the voter list have also surfaced.  PBT also raised the obvious problem with the ballot papers as each ballot contains a “serial no.” which could be easily tracked to find out whether the voter (doctor) has voted against the candidates of the ruling party.  This has already created a fear of retaliation in the minds of many doctors who may refrain from voting for this reason in the upcoming council election.  There can be no argument that “secrecy of ballot” must be maintained for holding any fair and impartial election.

This historic WBMC election is being held under direction from the Calcutta High Court only because of the PIL filed by PBT challenging the undemocratically formed Adhoc Committee with 10-hand picked doctors loyal to Trinamool-Congress which was established soon after Mamata Banerjee government came to power in West Bengal in 2011.  PBT will always stand against any attempt of rigging the election by the devious medical leaders backed by any political party.  PBT is planning to move the High Court against these alleged irregularities to sway the upcoming WBMC election through extraneous influences.  We invite all registered doctors  in West Bengal, especially teachers/professors in medical colleges, who have not received any ballot or suspect that their votes might have been rigged, to contact PBT head office in Kolkata (Tel: 9038083120/9836706952) or directly to PBT president, Dr. Kunal Saha, via email (anku1@earthlink.net) or telephone (001-614-893-6772).
