Doctors Belong To Mamata Banerjee’s Party Snatch Ballots For Council Election: PBT Urges Governor To Hold West Bengal Medical Council Election Under Independent Commission

The upcoming election in the West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) has turned ugly today when doctors belonged to the ruling Trinamool-Congress party openly attempted to snatch ballots from some doctors at the NRS Medical College in Kolkata.  This horrific incidence was shown in local TV and reported in major newspapers in West Bengal today.  The unprecedented election to form a new WBMC is being held by order from Calcutta High Court after PBT moved a PIL against the Adhoc Committee which was formed after Mamata Banerjee came to power ending the long ruling by the CPM-led government in 2011.  But instead of holding fresh election which was long overdue, Banerjee government put 10 hand-picked doctors who are loyal to her party to run the medical council.  While WBMC was in a rotten state during the CPM ruling, the situation became even worse after Trinamool-Congress came to power.  For the first time, PBT has also fielded several doctor-candidates including its president Dr. Kunal Saha to run in the WBMC election.  In view of today’s shameful incidence, PBT has sent an urgent memorandum to Bengal Governor urging him to conduct the council election through an independent body (see below).

Memorandum to Governor (May 26, 2013)
