High Court Issues Notice To Doctors Responsible For Anuradha Saha’s Death To Enhance Punishment

Justice Mr. Aniruddha Bose of Calcutta High Court issued notices today to the two doctors, Sukumar Mukherjee and Baidyanath Halder, who were responsible for the wrongful death of Anuradha Saha in response to a writ petition filed by Anuradha’s husband and PBT president, Dr. Kunal Saha, as to why their medical registration would not be cancelled permanently.  Earlier, Medical Council of India (MCI) held the two doctors responsible for Anuradha’s death and directed to cancel their medical registration for a period of three months.  In the writ petition, Dr. Saha has alleged that punishment for cancellation of Dr. Mukherjee and Dr. Halder’s medical registrations for a period of only three months by the MCI even after holding that the two doctors caused death of a patient is a travesty of justice.  Dr. Saha has claimed that the two doctors’ medical licenses should be permanently cancelled considering their role in his wife’s death and the fact that since both doctors are almost 80 years old and have virtually completed their professional career, permanent cancellation of their medical registration would be a symbolic punishment to send a strong signal to the negligent doctors in India.  The court also issued notice to the MCI and given them 4 weeks time to file a response affidavit.  The matter would come for final disposal after 6 weeks.
