PBT held a massive public rally at the Metro Center in Kolkata seeking immediate intervention of Mamta Banerjee, the recently elected chief minister/health minister of West Bengal, for immediate dissolution of the West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) that has been riddled with corruption (see news in Dainik Jagran below). The WBMC is brazenly shielding two of their senior medical colleagues, Sukumar Mukherjee and Baidyanath Halder, who were found responsible for causing death of Anuradha Saha both by the Supreme Court and the Medical Council of India (MCI). The MCI passed an order last month directing the WBMC to cancel the registrations of the two negligent doctors. But the reckless and corrupt members of the WBMC rejected the MCI order and refused to take any action against Dr. Mukherjee/Dr. Halder sending a chilling message to all victims of medical neglect that they would shield their medical friends without caring for directions from any higher authority. While Mamta Banerjee has shown keen interest to reform the abysmal healthcare status in West Bengal, she must immediate step in against this explicitly corrupt and devious act by the leaders of the WBMC. PBT has sent declared that a bigger and stronger demonstration will be organized unless the government acts now when PBT president, Dr. Kunal Saha, would be coming down to India to next month to attend the “final hearing” on July 11, 2011 in the historic compensation case for highest ever claim for the Dainik Jagran (June 25, 2011)wrongful death of Anuradha Saha.
